Ethnographic Model.

Using the ethnographic model (try and separate it into the three areas highlighted) evaluate your own text. Have you inadvertently prevented certain 'audiences' from accessing your text? Write your response in the space provided below.

We have prevented certain people into watching our music video. We have prevented 'information-poor' people from listening because they don't have the money to buy any of our products and they don't have access to the internet which means they won't be able to pass our music video on, and this will stop us from getting our music video around. If someone doesn't have access to the television either than our music video will not make much money as noone will watch it. We have aimed our music video at 'information-rich' people as this are the people that will be able to buy our products and they have access to the telvision to watch our music and they also have access to the internet which means they can pass our music video on and this means that lots of people will be able to have access to our music video.

She has a wide taste in music and enjoys the old classical stuff such as the 'folk rock' genre as her dad listened to this genre all the time and it grew on  her! She likes some of the modern stuff however she likes artists that aren't mainstream. She doesn't have a favourite artist. She loves reading magazines such as 'cosmo' and 'hello'. She love to read love stories in her spare time. Her favourite genre of film is 'romantic comdies'. D.I.Y Generic Analysis

• General

1) In what context did you encounter it? (web, film, TV etc)

I experienced the genre of our music video on the music channels such as the bliss TV which shows folk rock songs also some of the similar songs that we feel our similar to our music video; I have encountered them on other channels such as MTV. I have also encountered this genre of our music video on YouTube.

2) What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?

A lot of music videos on the channel of Bliss are emotional songs which are similar to our song. The songs give a meaningful message to the audience. Also on YouTube there are a lot of music videos that come up with the same genre of our music video and a lot of these videos give a meaningful message to the audience. There are a lot of videos on YouTube that have inspired us for our music video.

3) To what genre did you initially assign the text?

We assigned the text of the song initially of “soft rock”, but after we had a discussion we felt that our song would most fit the genre of “folk rock”. This is because the guitar that is being used in the song is an acoustic guitar and this is one of the conventions of this genre that we have used.

4) What is your experience of this genre?

For this genre we have not had that much experience of this genre because it is not our favourite genre of music. We decided to choose this genre of music because we feel that this would be a challenge for us.

5) What subject matter and basic themes is the text concerned with?

The main subject of our song is running away. We are showing issues of young people who are running away from problems that occur in people’s life. We feel that this theme will target a mass audience because it’s a popular theme that many people have experienced or know about.

6) How typical of the genre is this text in terms of content?

I think that the genre of text isn’t that typical in terms of content because not many songs with the theme that we have chosen of running away, is folk rock. We found a video with the same theme and the genre of the text is more soft rock. We feel that it is good that we haven’t got a typical genre for the content that we have chosen because then it will be more of a challenge for us

7) What expectations do you have about texts in this genre?

The expectations that I have about texts in this genre are, the music will be slow to go with the mood of the song. We would expect to hear the acoustic guitar, as folk rock music contains an acoustic guitar playing in the background. There should be some beat in the song to make the rock part of the song.

8) Have you found any formal generic labels for this particular text (where)?

9) What generic labels have others given the same text?

The beat of the music of our song, follows the generic conventions as it’s got a slow beat and builds up faster and this is similar to the genre of “folk rock”. The acoustic guitar that has been used is also another trait of the “folk rock” genre.

10) Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?

The conventions of the genre that I recognise in the text are the sounds of the acoustic guitar and the beat of the music that relates to the rock part of the genre. Our music video has a meaningful message which allows the audience to reflect on their life and this is seen in the same genres of our song.

To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?

The text stretches the conventions of this genre because of the theme of the text. It’s a very powerful and emotional subject.

11) Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?

The text may depart from the conventions of the genre because of the drums in the music video. The beat in the song would normally be made by some other kind of musical instrument, as drums are mainly for heavier songs. We have stuck to the conventions of the genre of being more depressing than other genres.

12) Which conventions seem more like those of a different genre (and which genre(s))?

The drums in the song seem more like a different genre. The genre that it seems more like is “Soft rock” which is the genre that we first initially assigned this text as. However most of the conventions of our text is more like “Folk rock” which is what we assigned the text.

13) What familiar motifs or images are used?

The familiar motifs or images that are used are the repetition of seeing the girl in the song running away and the words “She carries a bag...” is a motif that we have shown in our music video to show more about the girl in the video.

14) Which of the formal/stylistic techniques employed are typical/untypical of the genre?

The stylistic techniques that we have employed are the acoustic guitar which is typical of the genre. When someone listens to a “folk rock” song, the typical sound that would be heard is the acoustic guitar. This is what assigns the text as folk rock, because it is softer than rock or soft rock. However we have employed the drum as a stylistic technique and this is untypical of the “Folk rock” genre. However we have used this device to give more meaning to our text as is shows the different moods that the girl is experiencing and therefore the audience can then experience it as well.

15) What institutional constraints are reflected in the form of the text?

The institutional constraints that are reflected in the form of the text are the genre gives the opportunity for the audience to have an insight into the theme of our text as many people don’t really understand the topic. It allows the audience to stop and think and really look into our music video and they can then reflect on their own life.
16) What relationship to 'reality' does the text lay claim to?

The relationship to ‘reality’ that the text lays to claim to is the subject of the song is a real issue that people know about and that many people have experienced. It’s an everyday topic that comes up in everyday life. A lot of people will be able to relate to our topic of song and this will create a relationship between the audience and the text.

17) Whose realities does it reflect?

The reality our text reflects is the issue of the girl running away. This is a topic that comes up in the news a lot. Our text will attract a lot of audiences. There will be the older generation of people that may have experienced a child of theirs running away. This text will also attract a younger generation of people as they may themselves have ran away or knew a friend or sibling that have. A lot of people will know about this topic.

18) What purposes does the genre serve?

The purposes of what the genre serves are to convey the mood of the song. This will be helped by the use of sounds in the music and also the beat of the song. We want the audience to feel the emotions of the song through the use of music so they can feel what the girl in our video is feeling. This will also help with the lyrics of the song as the lyrics in a song help to convey the mood of the song.

19) In what ways are these purposes embodied in the text?

The ways that these are embodied in our text are through the use of expressions that the girl has in our video. This conveys the mood of the song and also helps the audience experience this mood as well.

20) To what extent did your purposes match these when you engaged with the text?

Are purposes matched very well when we engaged with the text because we could hear the mood of the song through the use of the sound of the song. We could hear the beat of the song conveying the mood and helping us to know more about the song. The beat of the song also helps to engage with the text as it starts off slow and then towards the end of the song, the beat goes faster.

21) What ideological assumptions and values seem to be embedded in the text?

The ideological assumptions and values that are embedded into the text are the issues that are to do with running away. This is a negative subject but can be positive for the audiences watching our text, as they can understand the reasons behind people running away. It’s an issue that is seen in everyday news but not many people understand the reasons behind why it happens, so our text will show the reasons behind this and this will be a positive impact on the audience. Our text also refers to ‘reality’ so many people will already have ideas about the subject of our text but we have allowed people to have more ideas about our text to create a relationship.

22) What pleasures does this genre offer to you personally?

The sound of the song isn’t uncomfortable to listen to which makes it a pleasure to hear. There are no harsh sounds or beats so we can stay relaxed. There is a more upbeat beat at the end of the song but this builds the tension and builds up the mood. However at times because of the song being a more depressing song it doesn’t make you happy but it still is a pleasure to listen too.
23) What pleasures does the text appeal to (and how typical of the genre is this)?

The pleasures that the text appeals to are the soft acoustic guitar that is playing in the background. This is the instrument that can be heard the most and this is very typical of the genre being “folk rock”. When someone is listening to “folk rock” the acoustic guitar is heard the most in the song.

24) Did you feel 'critical or accepting, resisting or validating, casual or concentrated, apathetic or motivated' (and why)?

About our media text, I am accepting the text for what it is because this is a topic that is seen in everyday life and this subject is not false of made up. I accept what I am seeing because it is the truth of what goes on in everyday life. I validate my text because it is a true representation of what is seen in the media. What I see in our media text is proven to be true. I am concentrated on the topic of our media video because it’s an issue to be concerned about. Its serious subject and many people that watch our video won’t be casual, they will be concentrated. I am motivated about my text and not apathetic because it’s a subject that is seen in the media nearly everyday and people will also be motivated about our text because they will be able to relate to our text because it’s an issue that is seen a lot.

25) Which elements of the text seemed salient because of your knowledge of the genre?

The elements of the text that seemed salient because of my knowledge of the genre are the musical instruments that are played in our song. The acoustic guitar is an important musical instrument that is related to our genre of “folk rock”. The beat of the music is also important to have because in “folk rock” it is mainly a slower lighter beat but at times it builds up to convey the mood of the song.

26) What predictions about events did your generic identification of the text lead to (and to what extent did these prove accurate)?

The predications about the events that our generic identification of our text lead to be was that it would be difficult to film a music video as a typical music video contains a lot of shots so it keeps the audience engaged. This came true as we had to film a lot of footage.

27) What inferences about people and their motivations did your genre identification give rise to (and how far were these confirmed)?

I think that our text may not be clear at the beginning of the music video as they won’t understand what has happened, but until they get into it they will then start to understand what has happened, with the help of the flashbacks. The audience may be put off by the subject of our text as it can be very powerful and emotional for people to experience.

28) How and why did your interpretation of the text differ from the interpretation of the same text by other people?

I think some people when first watching our music video may have a different interpretation to the text than other people because some may people know more about the genre than others and also the theme of our song, a lot of people don’t actually know much about running away and this is what we wanted to show the reasons behind running away.

• Mode of address

1) What sort of audience was your text aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre)?

The audience that we are aiming our text at is people aged 16-40. We have chosen this mass audience because we feel our subject of our song will appeal to this wide audience as people between these ages are most likely to know or have experienced the subject of our song. The audience that we have chosen isn’t typical for the genre of our text as the genre “folk rock” is mainly appealing to the older audience, but because of our topic we have chosen this mass audience.

2) How does the text address your classmates?

Our text addresses our classmates because our age range is between 16-40 and our classmates are aged between 17-18 so they fit into our age range, also our subject will be known by our classmates and some of them may even be able to relate to our subject.

3) What sort of person does it assume they are?

The type of person it assumes they are is maybe an emotional person, because our song is an emotional song however it could show they are considerate of the subject and they feel the subject of our text which shows they are a caring and considerate person.

4) What assumptions have you made about their class, age, gender and ethnicity?

The assumptions that we have made about the age of the audience are people between the ages of 16-40 as we feel that this age group would be most attracted to our text. We assumed that the gender of the audience will attract males and females. The assumptions we have made about the class of the audience is a variety of classes we mainly think that middle class people would be most likely to listen to our music. The ethnicity we have assumed of our audience will be any ethnicity as there are many cultures that may listen to our text.

5) What interests does it assume they have?

It assumes that they have an interest in the world around them as they may have an interest in the news and the subjects that are in the news everyday. It also shows that are interested in different genres of music as our genre of song isn’t a popular genre that is heard nowadays.

6) What relevance does the text actually have for you?

The relevance that my text has for me is that I am a teenaged girl and can relate to the age of the girl in the video. I can imagine what it is like to experience the emotions of what she is feeling, as we are in a similar age group. I have known people to run away so I can understand the feelings that the girl in our video is going through.

7) What knowledge does it take for granted?

The knowledge that it takes for granted is that most people don’t understand the reason behind people running away so in our video we want to be able to show these reasons so that people will understand not take the subject for granted.

8) To what extent do you resemble the 'ideal reader' that the text seeks to position you as?

9) Are there any notable shifts in the text's mode of address (and if so, what do they involve)?

The genre of music that is playing in our text is aimed at a older audience and this shifts to a younger audience when the girl in our text is on the screen as younger people can relate to this person more. The theme of our subject that shifts to address different people as many different people will have experienced our topic and this could be any ages.

10) What responses does the text seem to expect from your audience?

The responses of the text that seems to expect from our audience are people gaining the knowledge and understanding of why people run away. There is also an emotional response that is expected from our audience as the song of our text is an emotional song.

11) How open to negotiation is their response (are they invited, instructed or coerced to respond in particular ways)?

The audience’s negotiation of their response to our text is inviting as they can be open to different opinions, however we would like to instruct our audience to gain the knowledge of what it is like for someone to run away and we want their view to be instructed. We don’t want to enforce a coerced view that the audience has to have because we want the audience to come up with lots of different opinions and have lots of different ideas. We don’t want to force them.

12) Is there any penalty for not responding in the expected ways (think in terms of enjoyment for the audience or consequences for the institution)?

There is no penalty for not responding in the expected ways, we want our audience to enjoy our text but the ways they respond can be in different ways because we want our audiences to have different ideas about our text. We want the ideas to be positive because we want there to be a relationship between the audience and the text. If there are any negative ideas this could affect the institution however the negative ideas could be seen as positive, they may think negatively about our text which makes them want to do something about it which results in a positive outcome.

13) To what extent did people find themselves 'reading against the grain' of the text and the genre?

14) Which attempts to position your audience in this text do they accept, reject or seek to negotiate (and why)?

The attempts to position our audience in this text as accepting are the reality that people do run away in everyday life, and the reasons behind why people do run away. Some people may reject the reasons behind why the people run away as they may have experienced running away and the reasons behind the girl running away in our video could be different to the reason why they ran away.

15) How closely aligned is the way in which the text addresses you with the way in which the genre positions you (Kress 1988, 107)?

Whenever I hear that someone has ran away on TV, I always feel emotional. I watch a lot of “Missing” programmes. I have known people to actually run away but I have never known the true reason behind why people run away. Not many people do know why people run away so this is what we wanted to achieve with our music video.

• Relationship to other texts

1) What intertextual references are there in the text you have created (and to what other texts)?

We haven’t got any obvious intertextual references, but we have taken ideas from another music video that has the same subject as ours. (Midnight hour- running away). The song that we chose doesn’t have an original music video we have made up new ideas so we don’t have many intertextual references.

2) Generically, which other texts does the text you created resemble most closely?

Generically other texts that resemble the text most closely are the song “when September ends” by Greenday. This text generically resembles our text because of the sounds at the beginning of the song there is an acoustic guitar which is in our text as well, also the song is quite slow but the beat does build up and this is similar to our text.

3) What key features are shared by these texts?

The key features that are shared by these texts are the musical instruments of the acoustic guitars. The beat of the song also is similar to our song that we have chosen. Also the band being shown in the song is the same as our song because the audience can see the band in our song.

4) What major differences do you notice between them?

The major differences that I have noticed between these two texts are the greenday song is classified as rock and is heavier than our song. The beat is heavier and follows a different pattern to the beat of our song. This greenday song is heavier in the middle our song only becomes heavy at the end of the song.
